In March 2024 the Italian company iVis Technologies confirmed that the first successful corneal refractive surgery procedure between two distant locations was successfully performed; “San Carlo Hospital di Nancy”, Rome, connected the “La Nuvola” Congress Center to the Hospital via 5G during the national AICCER congress (Italian Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
The surgery was made possible by iVIs 4D Suite™ platform and, we are proud to announce that MKS technology is an integral part of this revolutionary solution: Two Ophir laser measurement sensors were specifically adapted to accurately measure the laser energy before and during the remotely controlled surgical procedure.
“We are very excited that our technology paves the way for all people to get good ophthalmologic treatment, independent from the geographical region they live in”, states Giuseppe D’Ippolito, CEO of iVis Technologies. “Measuring the energy level is key to our solution, both technologically and regulatory. First of all, we actively fine-tune the laser head at all stages of the surgery based on the measurements. Moreover, the energy sensors ensure the surgery complies with European regulations, as any oscillation larger than only 5% will lead to warnings, and a deviation of 20% will cause a shut-down of the laser.”
The world premiere was conducted remotely by Professor G. Alessio from the La Nuvola Congress Center while the patient was located in the operating room at the San Carlo Hospital di Nancy, Rome, with an obligatory surveillance team by Dr. Scipione Rossi (Director of the Complex Operating Unit of Ocular Microsurgery of the hospital) . Due to the multiple units integrated in the iVis 4D Suite the whole process can be conducted remotely.
The 4D Suite, through the Cipta®Web application, remotely manages the entire cycle of Screening, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Follow-up (SDTF) for corneal pathologies and refractive defects, with fully automated processes to standardize performance and eliminate intraoperative risks. The iRes®2 laser is designed to allow, via 5G connection, through the iVis Remote Control Station, the execution of the surgical procedure with remote control.
iVis technology measures laser energy with an Ophir OEM photodiode and a pyroelectric sensor. Both sensors are based on standard devices but are OEM customized to iVis’ needs with dedicated calibration that further enhances the accuracy of the sensors.
