The light-curing times recommended by dental manufacturers are based on placing the tip end of the curing light as close as possible to the surface of the resin, but in clinical situations, this positioning is often difficult or impossible to achieve. For example, the distance between the cusp tip and the base of the interproximal box may exceed 7 mm, a distance that will significantly reduce the light intensity available for photo activation of the resin. As a result, the manufacturer’s curing times may underestimate the times required to adequately cure the resin at the bottom of the interproximal box. To differentiate the curing effectiveness among the various curing lights, it is important to characterize curing lights away from their tip ends.
